2022 Anchorage Health Department Report on their use of alcohol tax funds
On a recommendation from the 2024 Alcohol Tax Strategic Plan, the Municipality instituted a requirement for an annual progress report on the financials and results achieved from the prior year’s Alcohol Tax spending. The first such report was issued in April 2025 for 2024 Alcohol Tax spending.
How do people in Anchorage feel about the alcohol tax?
In January of 2024, Alaska Survey Research conducted a survey of 722 Anchorage residents to measure levels of awareness and support of the Alcohol Tax. Key findings of the research include:
67% of respondents supported the alcohol tax and 25% were opposed.
Funding child abuse prevention, public safety, and mental health counseling were the top priorities for alcohol tax spending according to respondents.
Without being told the details of how the tax is being used, 67% of respondents support the alcohol tax (including 78% of those with a household income of $0-60K and 73% aged 18-34) and when informed about where the funding is going, support grows by over 10%. Addressing child abuse and domestic violence is especially popular.
